It is someone who does everything with a consciousness of a spiritual nature, doing NOT only because this is what is expected of him on this path, but doing actions because “this is what I expect of myself.” A child of God is a person who knows that by doing these actions that they will become more connected to the Lightforce of God.
The Zohar reveals a story about Rav Chiya and Rav Yosi, two students of Rav Shimon bar Yochai, which I will paraphrase.
As they were walking in the forest, Ravs Chiya and Yosi come upon two other men who were talking to each other and then they meet a third man who is starving. Unbeknownst to them, he was Elijah the Prophet.
One of the men said, “I don’t have to give him my food; I only have enough for my journey.” And, by the way, that is true according to spiritual law. If you see a man that is drowning and you don’t know how to swim, you don’t have an obligation to save him because one life is not more important than another person’s life.
The second man said, “I’m alive, full now, and I’m going to give him my food and water.”
As they are walking, it doesn’t take too long before the second man becomes exhausted and says he needs to rest. The other friend says, “I told you this would happen. I will go on my way.” The second man lies down beside a rock, and a rattlesnake approaches him.
Rav Yosi says, “Let’s help him,” but Rav Chiya says, “No, something is going to happen here.” Sure enough, the man who is lying down is about to be attacked by a second snake coming from the tree. But the rattlesnake overtakes the second snake, kills it, goes on its way, and the man is now free.
There are many situations where these types of miracles can and do happen. The reason the man was afforded the opportunity to decide if he was going to give of himself, even if it meant his own demise, was because he was supposed to die that day. But because he cared, the actions that he took – giving up his last morsels of food and water – gave him back his life.
That is a child of God.
